The Mount Pleasant High School Speech and Debate team got their season underway this past weekend at the Sabine Angel Tournament on Saturday, September 13 at Sabine High School in Gladewater. The intent of an “angel” tournament is to help inexperienced debaters learn what to do at their first tournament. Each team is to have one “angel” (experienced debater) with them for all their rounds. Angels can be Varsity debaters, graduates, or a coach.

In Informative Extemporaneous Speaking, Sabrina Otero-Svirska brought home 2nd place. In Persuasive Extemporaneous Speaking, Caitlin Anderson placed 5th. And in novice Lincoln-Douglas debate, Kaytlynn Sims placed 4th with “angel” Caitlin Anderson. Isaiah Shepherd competed for the first time in Lincoln-Douglas debate with “angel” Sabrina Otero-Svirska.

MP Speech and Debate’s next tournament is at home at the Fall Tiger Classic on October 18. They are coached by Joel Whitaker.
