Five members of the Mount Pleasant High School chapter of Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) attended the Region III Leadership Conference at the Waco Convention Center on February 16-18. Two chapter members advanced to the state level in Fashion Construction.

Senior Christopher Escobar competed in Fashion Construction, Level 3 (11th & 12th grades), and placed third. Sophomore Melanie Logue competed in Fashion Construction, Level 2 (9th & 10th grades) and also received third place. In Fashion Construction, students use new materials to construct, in advance, a garment or ensemble that dresses both the upper and lower body of a child or adult. The garment or ensemble must include at least eight fashion construction techniques. Competitors then display the finished product along with appropriate accessories.

Also competing for MPHS was the team of seniors Marcela Mata, Wendy Alarcon, and Javier Vazquez who competed in Focus on Children, an individual or team event, where students plan and conduct a child development project that has a positive impact on children and the community.

MPHS offers Fashion Design I and Fashion Design II for sophomores, juniors and seniors. Students in the program develop an understanding of the fashion industry with an emphasis on design and construction in addition to developing technical knowledge and skills needed for success in the fashion industry. Students gain an understanding of the laws and regulations within the fashion industry, identify types and uses of various textiles, interpret labels, and learn basic garment design and construction.

Escobar and Logue will continue to the State Conference at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas on March 31-April 2. MPHS FCCLA Advisors are Margaret Bradley and Aimee Sweeden.
