Students of the MPISD High School Art department, and their teacher Mrs. Laura Kirkland, enjoyed a field trip experience Friday in down town Mount Pleasant, Texas
Students took a bus ride to meet with Artist David Freeman, and Mount Pleasant’s Main Street Board President, Sheila Johnson.
The students took a stroll down main street to 120 N. Madison Avenue to see the new mural that resembles a wall from the 1800’s including hand-painted windows, stucco, brick and a “ghost sign” that features the original courthouse of Titus County. The mural is painted by artist David Freeman.
Students were given an up close & personal look at how the “Principles of Design”are integrated throughout this expansive work of art.
The two spoke with students about the importance of historic preservation and the many aspects of architecture & structural design, incorporated into this process.
Students were then taken on a tour through the newly renovated building owned by Mr. O.C Ross. The building is the home of Smarty “Creative Studio.”
During the tour, Main Street Board President: Sheila Johnson spoke with Students about the many aspects of structural & architectural design, necessary to preserve the rich history, and timeless beauty of the buildings in historic downtown Mount Pleasant.
Students also toured the beautifully renovated “Seasons Venue” located at 114 West 2nd Street. Both of these beautiful buildings are located on the historic downtown square in Mount Pleasant, Texas.

“We are very thankful for the opportunity to play a small part in the preservation and restoration efforts of our historic downtown Mount Pleasant.”
“It is important to preserve the history of “small town America” so that future generations will understand how our country was built. As our world gets bigger we hope to inspire others to remember how our small towns can always bring us back together.”
