The Mount Pleasant High School Jazz Band competed in the Music in the Park contest on Saturday, April 26 at Midlothian High School. The band played 2 pieces including “Spain” by Paul Jennings and “Cheesecake” by Rick Stitzel.
At the awards ceremony at Six Flags, the band earned a 1st division and 1st place in the Jazz Band category with a score of 96.75 out of 100.
They also received the prestigious Esprit de Corps award chosen by the judges from among all competitors in all categories. This award is presented to a school who demonstrates proper social and musical behavior, possessing the qualities of highly successful people who applaud accomplishments no matter if by one’s own school or another school.
And sophomore Pedro Castillo was chosen as the Outstanding Soloist on piano out of all competitors in the entire competition.
Members of the Jazz Band include Itzel Bello, Pedro Castillo, Dylan Cigarroa, Sebastian Contreras, Bruno Deleon Jr., Bryan Garcia, Nancy Gil, Anthony Gonzalez, Jose Lucio, Jesus Mata III, Makayla Mather, Edward Moya, Phillip Padilla, Christian Rojas, Alfredo Santillan, Isaiah Shepherd, Evelyn Whisenhunt, and Braden Chavez (8th grader).
