Fifteen Mount Pleasant High School students brought back awards from the recent Texas SkillsUSA State conference in Corpus Christi.  They garnered Best of Show designations, Superior Blue Ribbons, and First and Second places in their respective contests.

In the Cosmetology contest, Imelda Hernandez, Bella Mendoza and Vanessa Quinones each took first place in the Evening Comb Out. Kimberly Melendez earned second place in the same contest.

Crystal Gomez earned a Superior Ribbon for her Photo Panel while Klarrisa Vaughn also earned a Superior Ribbon for her Innovative Manufacturing Exhibit.

In Electrical trades, the team of Emmanuel Gonzalez, Jimmy Hernandez, Antonio Mejia and Giovanni Rocha was awarded Best of Show in the Commercial Wiring Category. The team of Jason Alvarado, Alex Castro, Michael Garcia and Alexandro Ramirez earned a Superior Blue Ribbon for Construction Wiring Exhibit.  The team headed by Moises Flores earned Best of Show for their Commercial Wiring Exhibit.

Isidoro Hernandez placed 2nd in Construction Wiring. In addition to the medal, he also won electrical tools, a tool belt and pouch and a $100 gift certificate from Lowes.

“Isidoro is only a 1st year Electrical Trades student so it is amazing that he took 2nd place in the State given the competition that he faced,” said Electrical Trades teacher Tim Davis. “This is an extremely difficult competition. Isidoro worked very hard and spent a lot of time outside of class to get ready for State. I am very proud of him as I am of the other Electrical Trades students who competed at State.”

“Our students in the Career Tech Department at MPHS work very hard to get ready for these contests,” said Dr. Judith Saxton, MPISD Director of Communications. “They spent hours outside of class time to practice their skills, build their exhibits and study for the written and practical skills tests they have to take at competitions.  The skills they develop preparing for competitions will help them after they leave MPHS whether they are going to college, technical school, an apprenticeship program or directly into the job market. MPISD is proud of their accomplishments and for how well they represent the district and the community. I want to also thank their teachers for their dedication to the success of all of our students.”
