Tiger Track Takes District Championship, Qualify 17 for Area

The Mount Pleasant Tiger Track team continued their season trend of dominating track meet at the District Meet held last Thursday at Hallsville. Originally scheduled to be a two-day meet with field events and prelims on Wednesday and finals on Thursday, the meet was condensed to a one-day meet with weather forcing the cancellation of Wednesday’s plans. This did not phase the Tigers as Mount Pleasant put up 179 team points besting second place Hallsville who only mustered 111 points. Mount Pleasant saw 17 athletes advance to the Area meet this Wednesday by finishing in fourth or better in their respective events.

Individually, the Tigers brought home three gold medals along with one relay gold. Sophomore Skyler Guereca posted a 15.28 in the 110m Hurdles to take 1st place and senior Will Hills took the Triple Jump crown with a bound of 45′-5.5″. Xavier Hills took the High Jump title clearing 6’4″ and the 4x200m Relay team of Dylan Bennett, Will Hills, Braylon Jones, and LaTristan Thompson posted a time of 1:28.81 to take gold. The same team also placed second in the 4x100m Relay with a time of 42.80.

In the 100m Dash, Dylan Bennett took second place with a time 10.78 while LaTristan Thompson took fourth place in the 200m Dash at 22.29. Gilberth Landaverde took the silver in the 800m Run with a time of 2:01.45. In the mile, Daniel Robles (4:39.97), Geovanni Calderon (4:49.68), and Johnathan Sandate (4:53.69) finished second, fourth, and sixth, respectively. Robles (10:03.11) and Calderon (10:16.78) also finished second and third in the two-mile along with Christopher Escobar (10:36.09) notching a sixth-place finish. Isaiah Hunter placed second in the 110m Hurdles at 15.57 as well as the 300m Hurdles at 40.92. Derrick Marshall (43.19) and Guereca (41.24) also placed in the 300m Hurdles in sixth and fourth, respectively. The 4x400m Relay team of David Buendia, Landaverde, Tykerrian Shine, and Hunter finished fifth at 3:39.64.

Tiger athletes excelled in the field events with the brother tandem of Xavier (21′-5.5″) and Will Hills (21′-5.25″) taking third and fifth in long jump. Xavier Hills also finished second in triple jump with a leap of 44′-0.75″. Tre Emory (49′-7.25″) took second in shot put along with Ricky Sampson (43′-11.5″) who finished fourth. Owen Green cleared 6’0″ in the high jump for fourth place and Camdon Johnson placed fifth in pole vault clearing 10’0″.

The Lady Tigers did not fare as well overall but still qualified 7 athletes for the area meet. The 4x100m Relay team of Paris Beard, Tiya Allen, Ladi Guereca, and Autumn Leroy ran a 51.85 for fourth place along with alternates Gyselle Lozano and Eva Hampton. Guereca also qualified in long jump in third place with a leap of 16′-6.5″ and Leroy took second in the high jump clearing 4′-10″. Other point scorers were Abigail Retana (2:41.3 – 5th) and Haylee Martinez (2:41.98 – 6th) in the 800m Run, Briana Gonzales (13:34.7 – 5th) in the 3200m Run, Guereca (17.69 – 5th) in the 100m Hurdles, and Hampton (51.07 – 5th) in the 300m Hurdles. The relay team of Hampton, Allen, Lozano, and Leroy ran a 4:48.11 for fifth place in the mile relay and the team of Allen, Lozano, Beard, and Leroy finished in sixth in the 4x200m relay with a time of 1:53.35. Nayeli Jaimes took fifth place in discus with a toss of 93′-5″ and Guereca took fifth in triple jump at 34′-11.25″.

The area meet will be held in Whitehouse on Wednesday with the top four finishers in each event qualifying for the regional meet in Arlington. Mount Pleasant will compete against their current district qualifiers along with teams from Tyler, Whitehouse, Jacksonville, Huntsville, Nacogdoches, and Lufkin.
