The Mount Pleasant High School Cheerleaders competed in the UCA Virtual Southwest Regional Cheer competition on December 9. The team placed 2nd in their division, earning them a bid to the National competition at Disney World in Orlando in March.

The team will participate in the UIL Spirit State Championships in Fort Worth on January 13.

They will compete in 5A Division II in band chant, crowd leading, and fight song. MPHS Cheer coach, Karissa Lopez, said, “Our cheerleaders have been working very hard all year. They have put in countless hours of practice time to perform well at all of our sporting events, while trying to keep State UIL as our focus. We are very proud of our 3-minute routine and we pray it is enough to qualify us for finals. There are approximately 54 teams in Texas competing in our division. Our cheerleaders have sacrificed and really given everything they have for this program and we hope to make MPISD and our community very proud this coming week!”

MPHS cheer finished 12th in the state in 2017 and 15th in 2018. They must finish in the top 20 in prelims to advance to finals. The MPHS Cheerleaders are coached by Lopez and Shanta Lockett.
