The Mount Pleasant High School Cheerleaders went to their first UIL Spirit Championship competition in Fort Worth Wednesday and Thursday and came back home ranked 12th out of the 112 5A teams in the state of Texas they competed against.

“I am so proud of them,” said Cheer Coach Jaton Broach.  “It was stiff competition and our girls shined! It was their first UIL competition and first competition with me as their coach, and I am so unbelievably proud of what they accomplished as a team!”

The UIL Spirit Championship is a cheer competition patterned after a typical Friday football game. During Tuesday’s preliminaries, the MPHS cheerleaders competed in three separate categories; Band Dance, Fight Song and Crowd Leading. MPHS placed 2nd overall in band dance and 19th overall in preliminaries, which placed them in the top 20 to move on to finals.

For the Finals on Wednesday the MPHS Cheer Squad performed one continuous three-minute routine typical of a sideline at a football game. They performed band dance first, moved to an offense or defense chant, led the crowd in cheers, and then finished with the MPHS fight song.

“We ended up placing 12th out of 112 5A teams in the state of Texas,” Broach said. “We beat over 100 5A schools!”

Mrs. Broach and the Cheerleaders will be recognized at the MPISD School Board meeting Tuesday, January 17.
