Twenty-four Mount Pleasant Junior High School students brought home medals and ribbons from the recent District UIL Academic Competition in Sulphur Springs. The team from Mt. Pleasant competed against teams from Greenville, Hallsville, Longview Forest Park, Longview Foster, Longview Judson, Pine Tree, Sulphur Springs and Texas Middle School.

“I am really proud of all of our students who competed,” said MPJHS Assistant Principal and UIL Coordinator Todd Daniel. “Whether they brought home 1st or 7th place, they are all winners in my eyes.  I know our seventh graders will accomplish even more next year when they can compete as 8th graders and our 8th graders are looking forward to UIL at the high school level.”

The MPJHS 8th Grade Art Team of Eimy Candelero, Victoria Cabrera and Denisse Muniz and the 8th Grade Chess Team of Brooke Vaughn, Sam Pearson and Israel Hernandez both took 2nd Place. The 7th Grade Art Team of Kylie Hedge, Joshlyn Paloblanco and Esmeralda Urista; the 7th Grade Maps, Graphs & Charts Team of Brock Shavers, Nicholas Segovia and Gavin Rider; and the 8th Grade Maps, Graphs and Charts Team of Nathan Rowland, Conner Nelson and Payton Windham all took 3rd Place.

Two students took first place in the competition: Ryan Sharp in 7th grade Ready Writing and Brock Shavers in 7th Grade Maps, Graphs and Charts.  Other individual winners include: Eimy Candelero 3rd place in 8th Grade Art; Christian Cespedes-3rd place in 7th Grade Chess;  Isabella Greco-6th place in 7th Grade Editorial Writing; Blake Mays-2nd place 8th Grade Music Memory; Rachel Moreno-3rd place in 8th grade Music Memory; Conner Nelson-6th place in 8th Grade Maps, Graphs and Charts; Sam Pearson-3rd place in 8th Grade Chess; Brian Ramirez-6th place in 8th Grade Music Memory; Patricia Roque-5th place in 7th Grade Calculator; Nathan Rowland-4th place in 8th Grade Maps, Graphs and Charts; Ryan Sharp-2nd place in 7th grade Editorial Writing; Brock Shavers-2nd place in 7th Grade Science; Taryn Thurman-5th place in 7th  Grade Editorial Writing; ; Jian Torres-3rd place in 7th Grade Ready Writing; and, Brooke Vaughn-2nd place in 8th Grade Chess.
