Thirty Mount Pleasant High School Health Science students recently completed the requirements for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) course with 28 of those becoming Certified Clinical Medical Assistants after taking the national exam. Students in the Medical Assistant program completed an in-person CCMA course and clinical rotations along with three dual-credit courses, Medical Terminology, Medical Law and Ethics, and Introduction to Health Professions, through Northeast Texas Community College. These 28 are now fully licensed to work as CCMAs in a medical setting.

While in the program, students participated in lectures such as pharmacology, nutrition, psychology, anatomy & physiology, general patient care and education, infection control, customer service, disease processes, and microbiology. Lab skills practiced in the new MPHS Clinical Lab include fingersticks, TB skin testing, suture removal, phlebotomy, subcutaneous and muscular injections, point-of-care testing, and urinary catheterization.

Students earning Certified Clinical Medical Assistant status include Elise Alcibar, Elizabeth Buck, Emely Chavelas, Evan Cota, Ariana Cruz, David Cumpian, Diya Desai, Haley Garcia, Patricia Gonzalez, Madison Hargrove, Addison Heeren, Karen Hernandez, Hayden Hester, Kelsey Howard, Christian Johnson, Autumn Leroy, Addy Long, Amir Martinez, Jesus Moreno, Kaylee Ramos, Franciso Rodriguez, Amy Santillan, Araceli Solis, Christopher Sorto, Jayden Tarrant, Avanleigh Thomas, Diego Ugalde, and Daniel Villarruel. They are instructed by Amanda Hutchings who said, “since I have been here, this is one of the highest pass rates for this test.”
