MPHS Golf Qualifies for Regional Tournament
The Mount Pleasant High School Tiger and Lady Tiger golf teams played in the District 15-5A tournaments at Tempest Golf Club in Gladewater. The Lady Tigers played on Monday, March 24 and Wednesday, March 26 with the Tigers playing on Monday, March 31.
For the Lady Tigers, junior Kylee Strickland was the individual district champion for the second year in a row, shooting a 72 on day one and a 71 on day two, a full 24 shots ahead of 2nd place. Senior, Kate Ball, closed out her high school athletic career as an active participant in Tiger Swim and Lady Tiger Golf.
The Tigers were scheduled to compete in a two-day tournament, but due to the possibility of inclement weather, they played all 36 holes on Monday, March 31, finishing as the District Champions as a team. Junior and 2023 UIL State qualifier, Jacob Baker, won the individual district championship by 20 shots shooting a two-day total of 134. Junior Brandon Carter shot a 160 to medal in 6th place overall. Also contributing to the District Championship score were sophomore Hogan Horn (168), freshman Bradon Lowry (185), and junior Alessandro Greco (232).
“Kylee Strickland punched her ticket to the girls 5A Regional tournament by shooting an incredible 72 and 71, -1, and winning the District Tournament by 24 shots,” said MPHS Golf coach, Benny Blaser. “This is the first time that I have had a girl win the District Tournament two years in a row. And this is the first time that I have had a boys’ team win the District Championship and only the second boys’ team that I have had qualify for the Regional tournament. The boys came together and played some great golf at the right time of the year.”
Strickland will play in the Regional tournament on April 14 and 15 and the Tigers will play in their Regional tournament on April 16 and 17, both at Tanglewood Golf Club in Pottsboro. MPHS golf is coached by Benny Blaser.
