The Mount Pleasant High School Cross Examination (CX) Debate team competed at the District CX Tournament Tuesday and ended the day with a 15 and 1 record. They also ended the day taking 1st and 2nd place at the meet and qualifying for State. This is the first time since 2003 that MPHS has had debaters qualify for state.

“I am so proud of these students,” said Coach Cody Morris. “They have worked so hard to achieve this. Their goal was to earn a State Medal and they have taken the first step. This is a young team with two sophomores and four juniors. They have a great future ahead of them not only in debate but in life. I could not be blessed with a better group of young adults.”

The team of junior Nathon Segovia and sophomore Audrey Courreges placed 1st and qualified for State. Segovia also won the Top Speaker Award.

The team of junior Anthony Preciado and junior Seth Robertson placed 2nd and also qualified for State.

The team of junior Devon Reynolds and sophomore Maritza Zambrano took 5th place.

The two MPHS teams will compete at State March 17-18.
