The Mount Pleasant High School Cross Country teams competed at the 5A UIL District meet on Wednesday, October 9, with both Varsity teams being named District Champions and advancing to the Regional meet.
The Mt. Pleasant Varsity Girls Cross Country team took the District Championship for the fifth year in a row. The Lady Tigers finished with a score of 29 while 2nd place finisher, Sulphur Springs, had 45 points. Placing individually for the Lady Tigers were Estela Dorantes (sr.) 1st place and repeating as District Champion for the first time since her freshman year, Christina Gordon (sr.) 2nd place, Buendy Fraire (jr.) 5th place, and Leilani Jimenez (fr.) finishing in 6th place. Also running for the Lady Tigers and advancing with the team to regionals were Jennifer Soto (jr.) in 15th, Katie Ochoa (so.) in 21st, and Heslie Castanon (fr.) in 22nd.
The Varsity Boys won their first district championship since 2011. The Tigers finished in a commanding lead with a score of 28 points while the 2nd place team, Royse City, had a score of 68. Leading the Tigers was Brian Ramirez (sr). 2nd place, Geovanni Calderon (fr.) 3rd place, Gill Landaverde (jr.) 4th place, and Pedro Robles (so.) 7th place. Completing the team roster and also advancing to regionals were Gilberth Landaverde (fr.) in 12th, Antonio Landaverde (sr.) in 13th, and Juan Gonzalez (jr.) in 17th place.
The JV teams also saw success with both teams finishing in 2nd place. Placing for the JV girls were Katia Lopez 4th place, Maritza Gonzalez 7th place, and Arlette DeJesus 10th place. Also running and contributing to the team’s 2nd place finish were Virginia Landaverde in 12th, Jordan Neal in 16th, Yessenia Serna in 17th, Jordyn Warren in 18th, Jaquelin Lomeli, Hailey Dixon, Noemi Rios, Jessica Mejia, Audrie Mendoza, Jocelin Rodriguez, Giselle Arellano, Gissel Delgado, and Cynthia Ramirez. Placing for the JV boys were Christopher Escobar in 1st and Aundre Alaniz in 4th. Also running and contributing to the team’s 2nd place finish were Johnathan Sandate in 12th, Tommy Arredondo in 13th, Didier Serrano in 17th, Sahir Ramirez in 18th, Michael Palmores in 20th, Esteban Trejo, Juan Retana, Christian Vargas, John Avila, Oscar Otero, Garrett Evans, Saul Alvarado, Jonathan Tolentino, Andrew Avila, Bruno Nevarez, Erick Jaimes, Sebastian Moyao, Neftali Vargas, Kaden Toon, and Param Poudel.
Both the boys and girls varsity teams will advance to the Region II 5A Cross Country meet at the Jesse Owens Sports Complex on October 28th. Mount Pleasant High School Cross Country is coached Bryan Trickey and Jesus Garcia.
