Mount Pleasant High School HOSA Members Advance to State
The Mount Pleasant High School chapter of HOSA: Future Health Professionals competed in the Area 3 Spring Leadership Conference on February 20-21 at Parker University in Dallas. The conference hosted hundreds of students who competed in over 50 events.
Seniors Alyse Cervantes and Laura Ramirez competed in Job Seeking Skills with Cervantes placing 2nd and Ramirez placing 3rd, advancing them both to State. Prior to the Spring Leadership Conference, each were required to submit a resume and cover letter for prejudging with only the top 10 advancing to the Spring Leadership competition. At the conference, they both participated in a mock job interview with judges. This event aims to inspire members to learn more about applying and interviewing for health-related positions and experiences.
Also competing for MPHS was the Health Education team of Marypaz Ramirez, Mallory Guzman, Genesis Licona, and Cristal Ramirez. This competitive event consists of a portfolio and presentation to judges. The team selected a health-related concept, prepared a lesson, provided instruction, and evaluated their results. This event aims to inspire members to be proactive future health professionals by educating others on health-related concepts. Jaliyah Brown competed in Prepared Speaking which requires students to develop a speech about a selected national topic. And Yaretzi Vazquez competed in Extemporaneous Writing where members write an effective letter to a policymaker outlining a relevant health policy or issue with supporting details.
Cervantes and Ramirez will compete at the Texas HOSA State Leadership Conference on March 23-26 in Corpus Christi. MPHS HOSA advisors include Kristi Houchin, Kaci Calloway, Sarah Carrell, and Lucero Rivas.
