Both Freshman and JV boys’ basketball teams traveled back and forth to Tatum last weekend to compete in the annual sub-varsity tournament held at Tatum High School. The two teams each had a successful tournament as the freshmen won four straight to bring home the trophy. The JV team also found success winning three straight games before falling in the championship game.

The freshmen opened the tournament on Thursday with a 37-33 win over Tyler Legacy. Their second game of the day was a little easier as the Tigers toppled district foe Hallsville 37-18. Mount Pleasant then took down Rusk on Friday 51-19 to advance to the championship game where they faced Nacogdoches. The Tigers defeated the Dragons 51-39 for the trophy.

The JV defeated Rusk 60-16 to open the tournament on a positive note. They followed up that victory with a 30-23 win over Whitehouse. On Friday, the Tiger JV outlasted Tyler Legacy in a double overtime thriller 41-37 to advance to the championship game. Just like the freshmen, the Tigers faced off against Nacogdoches but eventually fell 36-45.

The Freshman team coached by Brian Williams is now 5-1 on the season and the JV coached by Ira Franklin sit at 4-2. The JV will resume play this weekend at the TRMC Tiger Town Tournament as they compete in the small school bracket. The freshmen will play again versus Tyler Legacy on Dec 16.
