The Mount Pleasant High School Varsity and JV A Winter Guard teams competed at the Winterguard International Dallas Regional at Lake Ridge High School in Mansfield, TX on February 19. Both MPHS teams competed in the Scholastic A division which featured 36 winter guards from across the state. Schools in the Scholastic A division are not divided according to school size so MPHS competed against several large 6A programs.
The Varsity team competed in the first round of preliminaries and finished in 1st place in their group. The 18 highest scores of the day, regardless of round, advanced to the finals that night. After all the preliminary rounds, the MPHS Varsity team was sitting in 7th place overall and advanced to the finals. After a strong finals performance, the MPHS Varsity Winterguard finished in 6th place out of 18 finalists and 36 teams overall.
The MPHS JV A team competed in the 3rd round of the preliminaries and finished in 5th place in their group. Missing finals by just one placement, the JV A team finished in 19th place overall.
“I am extremely proud of how well the varsity did at the WGI Regional,” said MPHS Colorguard Director, Cristian Gomez. “The team had a good prelims performance. Afterwards, we talked about the things we can control and how we could have a better performance going into finals. The students stepped up and had a stronger finals performance. It’s great seeing the hard work these students are putting in is paying off. They are competing against some of the best colorguard programs in the state and they are holding their own.”
MPISD Winterguard will be back on the competition floor this weekend when they travel to compete at Pine Tree on February 26.
