The Mount Pleasant High School Calculator Applications and Math teams have advanced to the State UIL Academic Meet in Austin on April 22. Of the eight students on the teams, two advanced to State as members of both teams.

The Calculator Applications team of Carlos Barboza, Daniel Hernandez, Husban Shahid and Sanum Shahid won the 5A Region II Championship and advanced to State.  Individually, Carlos Barboza placed 1st and Daniel Hernandez placed 2nd.

“They tied El Paso Del Valle with 756 points, the highest team score in the state,” said team coach MPHS Math teacher Andy Speir.  “There are four really good teams in the state that all had really close team scores advancing to state – Lubbock with 740 and Houston Wisdom with 735 are the other two.”

The Math team of Jose Liera, Daniel Hernandez, David Barboza, and Husban Shahid placed 2nd and advanced to state as the wildcard.

Individually, Jose Liera placed 1st and Daniel Hernandez placed 4th.

“They had the 2nd highest team score in the state (808) beating the regional champions from the other 3 regions by a large margin. Lubbock came in 3rd with 732 points,” Speir said.  “This sets up a showdown at state with Highland Park which placed 1st as a team in our region with 848 points.”

“We are excited that these teams are advancing to state,” said MPISD’s Director of Communication Dr. Judith Saxton. “They set this as their goal at the beginning of the year and it is wonderful to see them achieve it. They have worked hard all year and their dedication and hard work have payed off.”
