I would like to congratulate Diego Lugo and Andrea Becerra for receiving gold medals and perfect scores at the State VASE Competition.

Comments from the Andrea’s Judges said: “Disturbing content BUT extremely well done. Great Job! Awesome draftsmanship. Well executed shading, Composition – spot on! I can feel the tension. Keep working and developing as an artist.”

Andrea received a IV which is an Exemplary rating with a perfect score of 20. This is a mixed media piece that has drawing with various items and attached pieces. Her piece is called “The System.”  It is about many tragic events in the environment. Also, the influence of politics, technology, war, and immorality.

Comments from Diego’s Judge: “Your composition is really strong and attention to detail is great! The way in which the figure is handled is very Proficient! The use of grayscale really adds to the image – keep up the good work!”

Diego also received a IV, Exemplary rating with a perfect score of 20. This piece is a drawing with extreme realism. His piece is called “New Slave.” As a viewer you might think he is referring to the baby however, when you understand the meaning you will find that he is actually speaking of the older man in the picture.  It is about the relationship between a grandchild and a grandparent. As a grandparent that would give and do anything for their New Grandchild and the love they feel for them.

I am so excited to see what these two talented artist come up with next! It has been a privilege to help guide and cultivate their talents so far. I am so thankful for my career here at MPHS working with all these young artists!
