The Mount Pleasant High School UIL Academic team competed at the 5A Region 2 UIL Academic Meet on April 25-26 at Walnut Grove High School in Prosper. The MPHS Spelling team advanced to the State Meet with Calculator, Mathematics, and Journalism competitors placing in their events and every MPHS competitor coming home with at least one medal.

The Spelling team of Brissia Alvarez, Karen Hernandez, Jennifer Luna, and Wendy Valdez were the Regional Champions, with Alvarez placing 5th individually. The team has advanced to the 5A UIL State Academic Meet.

The Calculator Applications team of Julian Chancellor, Tanner Marshall, Yahaira Piña, and Luke Thurman placed 3rd. The team set a new school record of 827 points, smashing the previous record from 2023 by 67 points.

In Mathematics the team of Gopi Amin, Marshall, Piña, and Thurman were just two questions away from advancing to state, ultimately placing 3rd.

And in Copy Editing, Alvarez placed 6th. Alvarez also competed in Ready Writing and with Jennifer Luna in Editorial Writing. They were coached by John Whitten.

Mount Pleasant is in one of the most competitive regions in the state. Of the over 60 schools in Region 2, well over half come from large metropolitan areas like Frisco, Waco, and Dallas Highland Park. In Calculator and Mathematics alone, three of the top five teams in the state are in Region 2.

The Spelling team will compete at the UIL State Academic Meet on Monday, May 19 at the University of Texas at Austin. They are coached by Gina Crouch.
