The Mount Pleasant boys and girls golf teams played last Monday in the Mount Pleasant Invitational held at Mount Pleasant Country Club. The girls team took home first place shooting 377 as a team. Grelyn Goolsby took home the championship with an 83 and Reese Ball finished second with an 89. Isabella Greco shot 102 and Sophie Greco 103 to round out the team score. “I’m very pleased with the girl’s performance. This is the first time we have taken home first in eight years,” said head coach Benny Blaser.
The varsity boys finished second with a 330 team total, narrowly missing the tournament trophy by five shots. Paris took home the win posting a 325 team total. Jackson Stone led the Tigers with an 80 followed by George Burrows’ 81, Brady Sisk’s 83, and Matthew Peterson’s 86. Stone finished fourth and Burrows finished fifth overall. “We just didn’t play as good as we should have on our home course,” said Blaser. “We were too inconsistent and never got comfortable with our game until the last five or six holes.” The JV boys team finished in first place on the day. Kade Strickland shot a stellar 82 placing him first for the tournament. Sam Sloan’s 86 put him in second and Clayton Brison’s 87 brought home third place. Jacob Elliott finished at 106 along with Matthew Tucker at 109, Micah Tucker at 108, and Jack Welborn at 115. “The JV boys played really well,” Blaser continued. “They made a few mental mistakes but did not let it slow them down. I’m excited about this golf season. The girls’ team is playing well, and the boys’ team has a lot of depth as you can see by the scores.” Both boys’ and girls’ varsity teams will play again on Monday, October 19 at Sulphur Springs and the JV will play at Gladewater.
