Thirty-nine Vivian Fowler Elementary School 4th graders became members of the National Elementary Honor Society as the Fowler Campbell-Edwards NEHS Chapter held its 2015-2016 induction ceremony Thursday, October 1, 2015. The Vivian Fowler NEHS chapter is named for two former Fowler teachers, Sandra Campbell and Sue Edwards, who both taught at the school for 25 years.  Before an audience of parents, siblings, grandparents, teachers and friends, the students listened as their chapter officers explained what it means to be a member of NEHS in the areas of Scholarship, Responsibility, Service and Leadership. The students, dressed in black and white, said the pledge and received their certificates of membership.

The guest speaker for the program was 7th grader Zaushalynn Lee who served as the President of the Fowler chapter of NEHS during 2012-2013. She told the new members what being a member of NEHS had meant to her and challenged them to live up to the standards of the National Elementary Honor Society.

In her closing remarks, Principal Cindy Davis congratulated the students on their achievements that qualified them for membership in NEHS. She encouraged them to continue to strive to do their best. She also congratulated the parents saying, “Your students would not be here tonight without your support and commitment to education. I thank you.”

To be a member of NEHS, a student must meet or succeed the national minimum standard of a cumulative average grade of 85%.  Students are also judged on their level of personal responsibility.  Once inducted, members are required to maintain the same level of performance in academics and responsibility. They are also required to attend monthly meetings and to participate in other chapter service projects and activities.

“These 39 students had to earn the privilege of being members of the National Elementary Honor Society; it is not something given to them” said MPISD Director of Communication Dr. Judi Saxton. “The District is proud of them. We know that they will gain a lot from their membership in this organization. Their experiences here will help set the tone for their future academic success as they move from elementary school to middle school, junior high school and eventually on to high school and beyond.”
