Thirty-three E.C. Brice Elementary School 4th graders became members of the National Elementary Honor Society as the Brice Chapter held their induction ceremony on November 3. Before an audience of teachers and administrators, parents and grandparents, sisters and brothers, the students listened to an explanation of what it means to be a member of NEHS, said the pledge and received their certificates of membership.

The officers of last year’s Brice NEHS chapter returned to the campus to explain the four main purposes of the organization. They told the new members that NEHS stands for scholarship (Sponsor Randi Rasco filling in for Isaac Hernandez who was unable to attend), responsibility (Samantha McClenan), service (Emma Snodgrass) and leadership (Raegan Houchin). These are traits that earned them membership in the organization and are traits that they should cultivate throughout their years in school and beyond.
MPISD Superintendent Judd Marshall congratulated the students on earning the distinction of membership in NEHS, telling them it is just the first step on the road to a successful academic career. He thanked the parents and other family members for their support of the students, noting that such support is vital to student success.

Marshall also talked about leadership. He told the new members that they were all leaders, and that being inducted into NEHS proved that. He told them that leaders have to make hard decisions but that they should always do the right thing no matter what others were doing. He reminded the 4th graders that the younger students on the Brice campus look up to them so they need to set a good example, be mindful of what they do, and be a positive role model.

Brice Principal Tracie Johnson said she was extremely proud of the students who were inducted into the school’s NEHS chapter. She also thanked the parents for their continued support for their students and for E.C. Brice.

“It is an honor and a privilege to be a member of the National Elementary Honor Society,” said MPISD Director of Communication Dr. Judi Saxton. “We know these students will gain a lot from their involvement in NEHS and that membership will set them on a path to further academic success as they move through middle school, junior high and high school.”

To be a member of NEHS, a student must meet or exceed the national minimum standard of a cumulative average grade of 85%.  Students are also judged on their level of personal responsibility.  Once inducted, members are required to maintain the same level of performance in academics and responsibility. They are also required to attend monthly meetings and to participate in other chapter service projects and activities.

NEHS recognizes 4h grade students for their outstanding academic achievement and demonstrated personal responsibility. The organization seeks to provide meaningful service activities for students to both the school and the community and to develop essential leadership skills in elementary school students.
