Mount Pleasant High School senior Nathon Segovia was recently selected as the MPHS DAR Good Citizen.\u00a0 He is the son of Jose and Jehovana Segovia.<\/p>\n
Nathon holds various leadership roles in organizations in which he is a member.\u00a0 He is currently Vice-President of National Honor Society, Captain of the Speech and Debate Team, and has previously served as Sophomore Class President, Freshman Class Treasurer, and Assistant Drum Major of the MPHS Goin\u2019 Gold Band.\u00a0 He is an Assistant Youth Leader at Greenhill United Methodist Church and is a member of HOSA and FBLA.<\/p>\n
Service to the community and patriotism are also important characteristics that good citizens possess.\u00a0 Nathon will serve his country in the United States Marine Corps before he enrolls in Texas A&M University, where he will major in Nuclear Engineering.\u00a0 Serving his country and his community are honors that he is proud to fulfill.\u00a0 Throughout high school he has participated in the Salvation Army Bell Ringer program, Relay for Life, Titus County Cares Food Pantry, and helped plan school spirit events for Student Council.\u00a0 This year he sought another way to serve by co-founding Cosmos Scholars, a free tutoring service that provides academic assistance to students in MPISD.<\/p>\n
Nathon has won numerous awards in Speech\/Debate as well as UIL Science.\u00a0 He was UIL Policy Debate District Champ and District Top Speaker in his junior year.\u00a0 He received the Academic All American Award, was a World School Debate National Qualifier, and was a member of the Texas Forensic Association state-qualifying Policy debate team.\u00a0 Also during his junior year, he was UIL Science District Champion and District Top Scorer in both Physics and Chemistry.\u00a0 During his sophomore year, he won Top Speaker honors and numerous other awards at various invitational meets.<\/p>\n
Nathon is a National Hispanic Scholar, MPHS All School Boy, and Rotary Student of the Month.\u00a0\u00a0 He has received Academic Blanket awards in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.\u00a0 He participated in the NASA High School Aerospace Program, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Weekend Immersion in Science and Engineering, and competed at the National Speech and Debate Tournament.<\/p>\n
The Martha Laird Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution sponsors the DAR Good Citizen program in our area.\u00a0 This contest is designed to honor an outstanding young person in a high school\u2019s senior class who demonstrates the four qualities of a DAR Good Citizen:\u00a0 Dependability, Service, Leadership, and Patriotism.<\/p>\n
Being selected as the MPHS Good Citizen provides Nathon the opportunity to participate in the scholarship portion of the program at the local Chapter level.\u00a0 Each contest entry is evaluated by independent, non-DAR judges.\u00a0 The winning entry is advanced through state and national levels of judging.<\/p>\n
