Counseling in D.A.E.P.

Mrs. Carmen Shavers

For Parents & Students: Information on Counseling & Programs

The counseling students receive at D.A.E.P. is basically about "choices", short term goal-setting and long term goal-setting. Students are allowed to share with the Counselor choices that were made prior to their placement in D.A.E.P. Reflection is part of this process, then we delve into what other choices were available as well as scenarios for making better choices. A planning sheet is used to allow students to think about their goals, both short term and long term. We discuss careers and career choices and what it entails to reach that goal, i.e.; college, trade schools, training, military, etc. We also discuss salaries for certain positions they may be interested in. During some sessions acculturation may be addressed and the difficulties students and families may be having with this process.

The counseling ratio in Texas is 441 students to 1 Counselor the Counselor tries to meet with each student weekly.  Many students need to be seen daily so that intervention can be utilized.
