MPISD Board of Trustees Meeting

June 22, 2009

    Student Recognitions: Public Information Officer Judi Saxton recognized MPJHS student Jesenia Ortiz for assisting a kindergarten student, who got off at the wrong bus stop, to safely find a familiar residence.
    MPHS Choir director Luke Dean introduced MPHS choir students Ana Eckstein and Audrey who earned 1’s on their solos at choir State Solo and Ensemble Contest. Both students performed their winning solos. Pianist Susan Farr accompanied both girls.
    Dean also introduced the MPHS Band students who earned 1’s at band State Solo and Ensemble Contest (TSSEC). The Saxophone Quartet of Edgar DeJesus, Lauren Eckstein, Philipp Rudnik and Garrett Trickey performed a portion of their music.
    Lauren Eckstein who earned a 1 on her saxophone solo performed a portion of the work accompanied by Farr. After Eckstein’s performance, Saxton announced that Eckstein had been named an Outstanding Performer at the contest, one of only 229 students to earn this distinction out of the 22,000 musicians who performed at TSSEC.

Veteran’s Diploma: The Board awarded George Swofford a MPHS diploma. Swofford would have graduated from MPHS in 1957, however he left school at 17 in 1955 to join the US. Navy. He served in the Navy for 20 years from the end of the Korean Conflict through the Viet Nam War. Swofford is the father of Annie Sims Elementary teacher Danielle Reynolds.
Board Business:
•Approved an overnight trip for MPJHS Cheerleaders to Cheer Camp at SMU, Dallas (July 28-30).
•Approved MPISD Policy Update 85 as suggested by TASB. Policies affect CNB(LOCAL): use of district vehicles, CQ(LOCAL):electronic communication and data management, DBB (LOCAL): employee medical examinations and communicable diseases, FL(LOCAL): student records and GRA(LOCAL)relations with local government authorities. Policies may be found on line at the MPISD website.
•Approved an update to DEC(LOCAL) pertaining to Family and Medical Leave (FAML). The change brings district local policy in line with that recommended by TASB and may be found at the district website.
•Approved an update to DED(LOCAL) pertaining to vacations and holidays. For purposes of accrued vacation days, the year runs from September 1 through August 31. Days not used, excluding those that can be carried over, will be lost .The policy may be found at the district website.
•Approved an update to FFC(LOCAL) naming Ana Decious as the staff liaison for homeless students.
•Approved a Dual Credit Agreement with Lamar University and the University of Texas at Arlington. Classes are all offered on-line. Students will be encouraged to take dual credit classes offered by NTCC before enrolling for those offered through this agreement.
•Reviewed the 2009 Head Start/Early Head Start Self Assessment.
•Dr. Bruce Gearing, Assistant Superintendent, presented required Title I Information to the Board. The presentation, designed to be used at Parent Meetings, explains what Title I is, parents’ rights under Title I and current and future MPISD Title I schools.
•Approved the Energy Management Conservation Policy as proposed by Energy Education, Inc. Randy Nolen will serve as Energy Education Specialist for the district.
•Accepted a proposal by Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation for payment of overdue taxes subject to attorney approval.
Bids and Quotes
•Approved the bid from Flower’s Baking Company for bread products and the bid from Blue Bell Creameries for ice cream products.
•Approved the bid from Jackson Oil Company for gasoline/diesel fuel for 2009-2010.
•Approved multiple vendors for classroom and office supplies and cafeteria and janitorial supplies.
•Approved the purchase of 90 Dell desktop computers at a cost of 842.22 each to be spread among Brice, Corprew, Fowler, Sims and Wallace. Funds will come from unspent Title I funds.
Reports
    TAKS: Assistant Superintendent Bruce Gearing provided a preliminary report on TAKS. Based on preliminary results, the final report will not be available from TEA until the end of July, MPISD could be a Recognized district with 4 Exemplary campuses (Brice, Corprew, Fowler and Sims), 2 Recognized campuses (Wallace and MPHS) and one Academically Acceptable campus (MPJH).
