MPISD Board of Trustees Meeting

Above and Beyond Awards
    The Board presented Above and Beyond Awards to Terry McCain, Gwen Hill and Rodney Huffman (Wallace); Dixie Brown and Debbie Thompson (MPHS-CATE); Janie Mayfield (CDC Food Service); and, Amanda Robertson, Andrea Cano, Gloria Martin and Camillia Traylor (21st CCC).
Board Reorganization
    Sheila Eakins administered the oath of office to newly elected Board members Yvonne Hampton, Lance Hinson and Lee Miche.

By acclamation, the Board elected Lance Hinson as President, Lee Miche as Vice President and Ezeal McGill as Secretary.
Presentations
    Board members Mary Hearron and Buddy Blue presented a plaque to out-going Board member Royce Carr thanking him for 12 years of service on the MPISD Board of Trustees.

    Senior Counselor Kelly Cowan introduced the Class of 2009 Valedictorian, Salutatorian and the remaining top ten graduates.
Student Recognitions
    Public Information Officer Judi Saxton introduced MPHS teachers and organization sponsors for student introductions:    
    Wallace Middle School Principal Rodney Huffman introduced Wallace 6th graders who placed at the UIL Middle School Academic Meet.
    Mount Pleasant Junior High School
Principal Brian McAdams introduced the MPJHS students who placed at the UIL Middle School Academic Meet.    
    Track coaches Alton Hawkins introduced senior Kole McKuin and Karen Williams introduced senior Destiny Smith, both of whom qualified to compete at the State Track and Field meet in Austin June 5-6.
    MPHS Band Director Richard Eckstein introduced the band students who will be competing at the State Solo and Ensemble Contest in Austin this coming weekend.
    MPHS Choir director Luke Dean introduced the four MPHS students who will be competing in the choir State Solo and Ensemble Contest in Austin this weekend.
    MPHS Principal Judd Marshall introduced sophomore Morgan Luedke who won the Ralph Hall Congressional District Student Art Competition.
2009 Employees and Teachers of the Year 
    Deputy Superintendent Jason McCullough introduced the 2009 Campus Employees of the Year and the 2009 Campus Teachers of the Year. After explaining the selection process, McCullough introduced Eva Beles (Sims) as the District Elementary Teacher of the Year and Randy Nolen (MPHS) as the District Secondary Teacher of the Year. Beles and Nolen will now advance to Region 8 competition.
Community Learning Center
    Principal Sally Conroy presented a PowerPoint presentation explaining the programs that are housed at the CLC.
Board Business:
        •Approved overnight trips for MPHS Band & Choir to State Solo & Ensemble Contest in Austin (May 29-31); for MPHS FBLA to National Competition in Anaheim, Calif. (June 23-29); for MPHS FFA to State Degree Check in Stephenville (June 10-12) and State FFA Convention in Dallas (July 7-10); and MPHS Track to Austin for State Meet (June 4-6).
    •Approved the addition of Jamie Cook to the PDAS List of district appraisers.
    •Approved the Memorandum of Agreement between MPISD and NTCC for Adult Education to be offered at the Community Learning Center.
    •Approved the American Red Cross Supported Shelter Agreement. The agreement identifies the district as a possible disaster relief shelter if needed.
Bids and Quotes
    •Approved McCollum’s Cleaners and Laundry as the District Uniform Cleaning Service provider.
    •Approved the discounts offered by Miscellaneous Maintenance and Transportation Vendors and Miscellaneous Instructional Catalog Vendors for 2009-2010.
    •Accepted the bid of $30,051.00 from James Blundell for the CATE Project House.
    •Accepted the bid from Guaranty Bank to be the District Bank Depository for the 2009-2011 biennium.
Reports
    TAKS: Assistant Superintendent Bruce Gearing reported the TAKS Reading results for grades 3, 5, and 8. Grade 3 (Brice, Corprew, Fowler & Sims) had a 98% passing and 48% commended. 5th Grade is 93% passing and 24% commended while 8th Grade is 98% passing and 44% commended. District results are 97% passing and 39% commended.
    Class of 2009: Judd Marshall reported that there are 291 graduates, 61 with honors (29 Magna Cum Laude and 32 Cum Laude). There are 11 early or 36-month graduates. There are only 16 students who have not passed all TAKS tests. 236 members of the class are Texas Scholars.
