Above and Beyond Awards
Above and Beyond awards were presented to
JoAnn Barrios (Fowler); Michael Lide (Sims); Carolyn Holland, Susan
Gage, Debbie Johnson and Tim Kelley (Wallace); Shannon Singletary
(MPJHS), Amy Webb, Denise Sanchez, Dixie Brown, Tina Redfearn,
Amparo Ramos and Deborah Cardenas (MPHS); Tim Davis, Aleshia
Rivera, Jim Alston, Micheal Huff, Kristin Hamilton, David Lester,
Jackie Scoggins, Teresa Kirkham, Donna Davis, Susy Whitten, Randy
Nolen and Mike Thompson (MPHS CATE), Brinda Peek, Pearl Ashley,
Sheila Jones, Joaquin Torres and Eliseo Barrios (21st CCLC-MPJHS);
and Primo Cespedes (Maintenance).
Recognition of Student Achievements: MPHS Academic UIL
Coordinator Andy Spier introduced students Feiran Chen and Lucas
Quasry, part of the Number Sense Team that qualified for State. He
also outlined the results from district and regional competition
for the MPHS Math and Science Teams. Kathy Zwernemann, MPHS
Journalism teacher, introduced Jordan Redfearn and Mario Lucio,
MPHS winners at District. Susy Whitten and Randy Nolen discussed
MPHS HOSA winners. Superintendent Terry Myers also introduced
Joseph Redfearn, state electrical trades winner, and Judy
Palacious, state FBLA winner, who will compete at their respective
national contests this summer. Myers also outlined the awards won
by MPHS art students and Regional Citizen Bee winners.
Board Business
•Approved a resolution authorizing a joint election agreement between MPISD and the Titus County Fresh Water District. The agreement is for early voting for the May 10, 2008 election.
•Approved the LEP Summer School Schedule. Students will attend school from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday beginning June 9 and ending July 3.
•Approved the Texas Educator Excellence Grant (TEEG) Cycle III for P.E. Wallace Middle School and Mount Pleasant High School.
•Approved the District Awards for Teacher Excellence (DATE) Plan. The state will provide 85% of the funds matched by 15% local funds. MPISD will use funds set aside for the mentoring program as the local match.
•Approved overnight trips for MPHS to Regional UIL Academic Meet, Denton (April 11-12); MPHS Golf Team to Regional Golf Meet, Denton (April 20-22); MPHS Boys and Girls Track Team to Regional Track Meet, Denton (April 25-26); MPHS to State UIL Academic Meet, Austin (May 2-3); MPHS Ready, Set, Teach to New York (May 4-8), MPHS Band and Choir to Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest, Austin (May 23-25), MPHS Cheer to National Cheerleaders Association Camp, SMU (June 9-12); MPHS Tiger Dolls to Camp, Dallas (June 13-16); MPHS SkillsUSA to National Contest, Kansas City, KS (June 22-28); and, MPHS FBLA to National Leadership Convention, Atlanta, GA (June 24-30).
•Approved the Educational Broadband Service Long-Term Lease Agreement with Clearwire

•Accepted the bid from Stansell's City Cleaners for Uniform Cleaning Services for $2850
•Accepted the bid from D & R Yard Services (Rick Zachary) for construction of the Chain Link Fence at Mount Pleasant High School for $26,235
•Rejected the bid of $151,950 from Richard D. Jones Construction for the Dressing and Concessions Facility at the tennis courts on the MPJHS campus. The district will act as it's own General Contractor for construction of the facility under the direction of architect Jeff Potter.
Reports:
Assistant Superintendent Bruce Gearing presented the preliminary Math TAKS first administration report. In fifth grade, 81% of students passed with a 25% Commended level. If the TAKS-Accommodated students are removed, the figures are 86% passing and 27% Commended. In 8th grade, 81% passed with 13% Commended. Without the TAKS-A students, the results are 86% passing and 14% Commended. For this year's fifth graders, in 2007, 76 hadn't passed after the 1st administration of the test. This year, only 67 haven't passed including the 20 TAKS-A students. For this year's 8th graders, in 2007 85 of them hadn't passed. In 2008, 55 haven’t passed (including 18 TAKS-A students).
