Regular Meeting - August 27, 2007
At 5 p.m., the Board held Public Hearings on the proposed
operating budget for the 2007-2008 school year and on the proposed
tax rate for the 2007 tax year. Superintendent Terry Myers and
Business Manager Stacie Thompson discussed elements of the budget
and the tax rate.
Board Business:
•Presented certificates to Bud Kitchens, General Manager of East
Texas Broadcasting, Jennifer LaPrade, Features Editor of the Mount
Pleasant Daily Tribune, and Jeremy Weber, former Sports Editor of
the Mt. Pleasant Daily Tribune, naming them as members of the TASB
Media Honor Roll. The three were honored for their continuing fair
and accurate coverage of MPISD.
•Approved an overnight trip for MPHS Skills USA to Washington D.C.
for Leadership Training (Sept. 15-19).
•Approved a resolution concerning the Religious Viewpoints
Antidiscrimination Act passed by the 80th Texas Legislature. The
resolution states that the board will examine district policies to
insure that the district is in compliance.
•Approved a resolution designating 4H activities as approved
extra-curricular activities and appointing Kenny Rollins, Texas
Cooperative Extension Service, as an adjunct MPISD faculty
member.
•Changed the date of the regular December Board meeting to Monday
December 17 and the date of the regular January 2008 Board meeting
to Tuesday, January 22.
•Approved five budget amendments.
•Adopted an operating budget for the 2008 Fiscal year. The budget
amount is $40,847,560 with $38,011,160 allocated to Maintenance and
Operations (M & O) and $2,836,400 allocated to Interest and
Sinking (I & S).
•Adopted an ordinance setting the tax rate for the 2007 tax year at
$1.195 per $100 valuation with $1.040 for M & O and $0.155 for
I & S. The rate is an $0.256 decrease from last year.
•Approved an Operational Procedures Agreement for the TIPS (The
Inter-local Purchasing System) Employee Benefits Cooperative. The
district is joining the cooperative offered by Region 8 for
Employee Cafeteria Plan benefits (ex. Dental Insurance, Vision
Coverage).
Reports:
Superintendent Terry Myers reported that the district had a very
smooth first day of school. Current enrollment is 5377 with
enrollment expected to pass 5400. E.C. Brice had 534 students and
enrollment at P.E. Wallace bypassed that of MPJHS. There are 1357
students at MPHS with a freshman class of 405.
Adam McKnight, Sedalco Construction Manager, reported that all
construction work in the district, other than the classroom
addition at MPHS and some casework at Wallace, was completed in
time for the first day of school. They are putting some finishing
touches on the K-4 additions. The MPHS addition should be complete
by the second week in October. Costs should come in just under the
Guaranteed Maximum Price quoted by Sedalco at the outset of the
projects.
