MPHS Student named FFA Area 6 President Article By Alexi Mayfield - Tigertalk Editor Ryon Cox, 17, a junior at Mount Pleasant High School, has been Cox has been active in the FFA program since 7th grade, from showing animals to participating in leadership and career development events and livestock shows. “We’ve had area officers before but not president,” Marty Spradlin, MPHS Ag advisor said. “There are over one hundred chapters and 9,000 members that he represents. He will represent Texas at the National FFA Convention in October. We’re very proud of Ryon.” Cox said he was drawn into the program because of what it represents. “The FFA mission is to make a positive impact on the community and students through agricultural education,” Cox said. “I’ve always thought the program is a great way to be involved within the community.” Cox said that his experience in the program has offered many opportunities he might not have otherwise had. He was elected Greenhand president his first year by his peers. Last year he served as Paris District Vice-President. His wall is lined with plaques and awards for his accomplishments. “There is a quote that says, ‘from the outside looking in you don’t understand it, but from the inside looking out, you can’t explain it,’” Cox said. “That explains the experience that I and other members of the National FFA Organization seem to have. That goes from national to local members.” His duties as president include leading the 9,000 members within Area 6 and making decisions with fellow team members, from state to national level, as delegates at conventions. These decisions include constitutional changes or amendments, and influencing today’s political figures on agricultural issues. “There is no way I could have gone this far without the tremendous efforts of my three Ag teachers,” Cox said. His teachers are Susie Hearron, Clint Chitsey, and Spradlin. Cox is quick to add praise to retired Ag teacher Mike Thompson, who helped him get his start at MPHS. “These teachers sacrifice so much of their personal lives to help us students with any goal that we have set for ourselves,” Cox said. “In some cases we tend to take things for granted, but their work should not go unnoticed.” Spradlin said Cox is a great communicator, reaching out to everyone he meets. “He is one of the most motivated students in school and out. No matter where we go, everybody knows Ryon, and Ryon knows everyone,” Spradlin said. “He will go out of his way to speak to everybody; not just the most influential, but everyone.” Cox will serve in his Area presidential capacity for one year. “Then I plan to run for state FFA office,” he said. Cox intends to attend Texas A&M University upon graduation in 2013, majoring in agricultural education, with a minor in livestock nutrition. “I want to come back to the Mt. Pleasant area and teach Ag and run a purebred Hereford operation,” Cox said. “If I can influence one student the way my teachers have influenced me, it will all be worth it.” |
