Twenty-five Corprew Elementary School 4th graders became members of the National Elementary Honor Society as the Corprew NEHS Chapter held their annual induction ceremony on Thursday, November 10.

The students and the audience of parents, brothers and sisters, grandparents, Corprew teachers and staff listened as the chapter officers explained the criteria for membership and the four characteristics of an NEHS member. The students alternated speaking in English and Spanish. Co-President Angel Garcia discussed membership criteria in English while Vice-President Luis Rojo talked about Scholarship in Spanish. Secretary Marilyn Johnny Neal talked about Responsibility in English. Treasurer Eder Alonso explained the characteristic of Service in Spanish and Co-President Bryan Gil discussed the final characteristic, Leadership, in English. Kaylee Fulce then led the inductees in their membership pledge in English.

MPHS Graduate Darren M. Palmer, a motivational speaker and author, congratulated the students on their achievement telling them that it is an honor to be a member of NEHS. He told them that they had chosen the extraordinary over the ordinary and that he knew it took extra effort to be extraordinary. He told them to always remember that it is cool to be smart no matter what others might say.

Palmer reminded them that they were role models for the younger students on campus and for their brothers and sisters. He told them to always do the right thing and that it wouldn’t always be comfortable. He encouraged them to learn to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.

To be a member of NEHS, a student must meet or exceed the national minimum standard of a cumulative average grade of 85%.  Students are also judged on their level of personal responsibility.   NEHS recognizes 4th grade students for their outstanding academic achievement and demonstrated personal responsibility. The organization seeks to provide meaningful service activities for students to both the school and the community and to develop essential leadership skills in elementary school students.

“These 25 students had to earn the privilege of being members of the National Elementary Honor Society; it is not something given to them,” said MPISD Director of Communication Dr. Judi Saxton. “We are proud of them and know that they will gain a lot from their membership in this organization. Their experiences here will help set the tone for their future academic success as they move from Corprew to middle school, junior high school and eventually on to high school.”
