Brice Administrator Named TEPSA Assistant Principal of the Year

The Texas Elementary Principals & Supervisors Association (TEPSA) recently recognized Amy Stewart, assistant principal at E. C. Brice Elementary School, as its 2019 National Assistant Principal of the Year for Texas.

“I don’t feel deserving of this award,” said Stewart who has been an assistant principal at both Frances Corprew Elementary School and Brice. “I think there are a lot of awesome assistant principals out there, a lot of awesome administrators. Working at Corprew and here, I know that it takes a team – you have to have a very solid team in place. If you don’t have that strong administrative team, it’s hard to do what you have to do.”

Stewart earned her education degree from Oklahoma University, got her masters in counseling from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, and has been in education for 20 years. Before becoming an assistant principal, she has been a fourth-grade teacher, taught junior high math, and been a counselor at the primary school, elementary, and junior high levels.

When asked what was the best part of her job, she said without hesitation: “The kids; one hundred percent. I know that sounds kind of cliché, but it really is.”

“We have some great kids and great parents here,” she said. “And I feel lucky to be in a community where there is a lot of community support.”

The TEPSA award recognizes assistant principals for their commitment to student learning as evidenced by exceptional school leadership.

“We have an awesome staff,” said Stewart. “I’ve been at Corprew, and I’ve been here, [and] there are teachers on both campuses that will do whatever it takes. They’re getting here early, they’re staying late, they’re meeting with parents, they’re going out and doing home visits. I know this without a doubt – our teachers would do anything for their kids up here.”

“I wake up every day and look forward to coming to work,” she added. “I love being around the kids; I like seeing them learn, and watching them grow. I feel blessed to be working at Mount Pleasant ISD and E.C Brice.”
