Twenty-six E.C. Brice Elementary School 4th graders became members of the National Elementary Honor Society as the Brice Chapter held their induction ceremony on November 29. Before an audience of teachers and administrators, parents and grandparents, sisters and brothers, the students listened to an explanation of what it means to be a member of NEHS, said the pledge and received their certificates of membership.

Students and audience members listened to an explanation of what it means to be a member of NEHS. Chapter officers described the important characteristics of an NEHS member. Vice President Sam Chappell discussed Scholarship, Secretary Chloe Snodgrass explained Responsibility, Treasurer Luis Alvarado talked about Service and President Luke Thurman discussed Leadership.

MPISD Superintendent of Schools Judd Marshall was the guest speaker for the 4th NEHS Induction Ceremony at Brice. He congratulated the students on their achievements and thanked the parents and family members for their commitment to the academic success of the students who had just become members of NEHS.

Marshall told them that his great-grandmother, who only had a 6th grade education, had instilled in him the value of education.

“She believed that education was second only to God and family,” he said. “She told me that someone could take everything away from me but that no one could take my education away. She also told me to be what I wanted to be and to not let anyone tell me that I can’t.”

“I tell you the same thing tonight. Don’t let anyone discourage you. You can be what you want to be no matter what that may be. It will take hard work, but with an education you can succeed.”

He also told the students that he was “very proud of them” and encouraged them to continue to do their best throughout their time in MPISD.

Brice Principal Craig Toney said he was extremely proud of the students who were inducted into the school’s NEHS chapter. He also thanked the parents for their continued support for their students and for E.C. Brice.

“It is an honor and a privilege to be a member of the National Elementary Honor Society,” said MPISD Director of Communication Dr. Judi Saxton. “We know these students will gain a lot from their involvement in NEHS and that membership will set them on a path to further academic success as they move through middle school, junior high and high school.”

To be a member of NEHS, a student must meet or exceed the national minimum standard of a cumulative average grade of 85%.  Students are also judged on their level of personal responsibility.  Once inducted, members are required to maintain the same level of performance in academics and responsibility. They are also required to attend monthly meetings and to participate in other chapter service projects and activities.

NEHS recognizes 4th grade students for their outstanding academic achievement and demonstrated personal responsibility. The organization seeks to provide meaningful service activities for students to both the school and the community and to develop essential leadership skills in elementary school students.
