MPJHS Bands Win Big at Contests

The month of March was a very busy and exciting time for the Mount Pleasant Junior High School band program.

On Thursday, March 22, the MPJH Honors and Symphonic Bands performed in the Pleasant Grove Invitational Festival (Pre-UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest) at Pleasant Grove High School in Texarkana.  Both bands received a Sweepstakes Award. This means both bands received a first division (Superior Rating) on their stage performances and in sight reading.

According to MPJHS Band Director Karen Luckett, this is the first time in the history of the MPJHS band program that both bands received this award at this contest.

On Wednesday, March 28, the MPJH Symphonic Band performed in the Region IV Middle School UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest at Pleasant Grove High School. They again received a Sweepstakes Award, receiving a first division (Superior Rating) on their stage performance and in sight reading.

“After looking at past records, this is the first time in the history of the band program the Symphonic Band has ever received a Sweepstakes Award at a UIL Contest,” Luckett said.

Then on Thursday, March 29, the MPJH Honors Band performed in the Region IV Middle School UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest at Pleasant Grove High School. They received a first division (Superior Rating) on their stage performance.

“I am thrilled at how well both groups of students performed,” Luckett said. “Both Alicia Hargett, who directs the Symphonic band, and I are so proud of the way our students stepped up and performed at such a high level. They were great representatives of Mt. Pleasant.”
