This week is Red Ribbon Week at Mount Pleasant ISD.

Between Monday, October 23 and Thursday, October 26, the campuses of MPISD will schedule special events to inform students about the dangers of drug abuse and to encourage students to take a pledge to “Say No to Drugs”.

“Red Ribbon Week is a special time that we can let our students and staff know about the district’s commitment to be drug free,” said Dr. Judith Saxton, the district’s Director of Communications.  “By planning special activities at the campus level, we can direct the message to our students in a way they will all understand.”

Each campus adopts a theme for each day of the week, Saxton explained.  Students and staff then dress according to the theme.  Many of the campuses also plan age appropriate special programs to encourage students to stay drug free.

Vivian Fowler Elementary School will start the week with their annual March Against Drugs and red balloon release on Monday. Corprew Elementary students will create drug-free messages with chalk around the school sidewalks on Tuesday. Students at Wallace Middle School will design their own Red Ribbons and write a rap song about avoiding the use of drugs. On Wednesday, the MPHS Student Council will read biographies of people whose lives have been affected by drugs and alcohol over the PA system.

Many of the campuses also have classroom door decorating contests, poster contests and essay contests, Saxton added. “The focus during the entire week is the benefits of staying drug-free.”

For more information on the activities on each of the MPISD campuses, refer to the calendar below, contact your child’s school or contact the District Communications Office at 903-575-2000, ext. 1821.
